چکیده

The wake behind a circular cylinder in Mach 4 flow is examined experimentally in the Reynolds number range 2× 104 to 5× 105. Periodic oscillations of the sliplines in the wake are observed. The Strouhal number of the oscillations based on the diameter of the cylinder is found to increase monotonically from 0.30 to 0.50 with increasing Reynolds number. If the Strouhal number is formed using the length of the sliplines, however, it has a constant value of approximately 0.48 for all Reynolds numbers studied. This scaling indicates that the oscillations in supersonic flow are likely driven by acoustic signals propagating back and forth through the subsonic region between the separation points on the cylinder and the neck where the sliplines converge, unlike in subsonic flow where oscillations are caused by vortices shed from the cylinder surface.

Hawkmoth flight stability in turbulent vortex streets.

Shedding of vortices is a common phenomenon in the atmosphere over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. However, it is unclear how these vortices of varying scales affect the flight performance of flying animals. In order to examine these interactions, we trained seven hawkmoths (Manduca sexta) (wingspan ~9 cm) to fly and feed in a wind tunnel under steady flow (controls) and in the von...

Numerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder

Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...

Rate of Pressure Rise in SI Engine Cylinder and its Relation to Knock (RESEARCH NOTE)

Tremendous efforts have been devoted to study the complex phenomenon "knock in spark ignition engines. There is an increasing interest in providing some tools to study knock in simulated data. In the previous studies, engine cylinder pressure oscillation has been used to investigate knock. Unless those methods involved highly complex non-detailed chemical relations, the previous studies were de...

Ship wakes: Kelvin or Mach angle?

From the analysis of a set of airborne images of ship wakes, we show that the wake angles decrease as U(-1) at large velocities, in a way similar to the Mach cone for supersonic airplanes. This previously unnoticed Mach-like regime is in contradiction with the celebrated Kelvin prediction of a constant angle of 19.47° independent of the ship's speed. We propose here a model, confirmed by numeri...

Simulation of Premixed Combustion Flow around Circular Cylinder using Hybrid Random Vortex

This research describes the unsteady two-dimensional reacting flows around a circular cylinder. The numerical solution combines the random vortex method for incompressible two-dimensional viscous fluid flow with a Simple Line Interface Calculation (SLIC) algorithm for the propagation of flame interface. To simplify the governing equations, two fundamental assumptions namely Low Mach Number and ...
